Wow. I am actually surprised by this. I thought for sure he was headed to Houston or Denver. The AFC just got easier for the Pats as if it wasn't already a cake walk.

Tony Romo’s NFL career is coming to an end.

Romo has decided to retire from the NFL and enter broadcasting, ESPN reports.

There have been widespread reports that Romo has lucrative offers to work in TV and could replace Phil Simms as the No. 1 analyst on CBS. Those offers have apparently led Romo to conclude that it’s time for him to walk away from playing and move into his next career.

Romo spent last season on the bench after a preseason back injury led to the promotion of Dak Prescott as the starting quarterback in Dallas. Although Romo had been widely viewed as the Cowboys’ franchise quarterback, Prescott’s outstanding rookie year made Romo expendable.

The Cowboys would have liked to trade Romo but found little interest, and the ESPN report says they will release Romo today. Although there’s been talk of the Broncos or Texans wanting him, it appears that he’s done playing football and will now broadcast football instead.

Someone posted this in the comment field and it make me chuckle.

Not buying it.

I think he's playing this angle to expedite his release. Jerrah seems all too content to sit on him.

If he is messing with Jerrah than I Love it and him. You go Tony!

I never really cared for Romo. I didn't really dislike him, just sorta,....meh.

Now that he has rescued all of America from Phil Simms, I love that man. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Tony.

Same here.

I mean, doesn't seem to be a dick. But really. What's he done?

With an owner capable and willing to move earth to make whatever he needed happen.

The resume is light.

I agree, I think this is a way for Jerrah to spend the Romo money - Romo to unretired and force the trade because the Cowboys no longer have the cap space.

He is a draft day 2 move to Houston.

So if Romo retires than Jerrah saves all that money against the cap? If yes, then I think you see the Boys make an offer sheet to Butler.

I found this on the cap when a player retires. Basically it has the same effect as if the player was cut. So the Cowboys will still take the cap hit for Romo but can recoup part of his signing bonus if they want. The key here though is if Romo decides to unretire at a later date, the Cowboys still hold his rights. He is not a FA.

Retirements
Teams can end a contract at any time, but so can players. In a player's case, though, the only way they can do this is by retiring. In the end, though, the math looks pretty much the same as if the player had been cut -- and the June 1 rule applies here, too.

For instance, if our player from the example above had retired instead of being cut, his money would account the same way as if he had been cut by the team. If he files his retirement paperwork on or after June 1, the money counts as if he was cut on or after June 1.

Just like anything else in the NFL, though, there is a "but" for this rule, too: if the player retires with time remaining on his contract, then chooses to come back into the league later, he is not a free agent. Contracts apply, in most cases, to accrued seasons, not calendar years. If the player doesn't play, he doesn't accrue a season. Therefore, his return to the field would put him back under the control of the same team, unless that team chooses to cut him. This rule is part of the reason why Barry Sanders chose to retire: the Lions refused to cut him, and he decided he'd rather stop playing altogether than play another season for Detroit. Conversely, Brett Favre retired, and then the team chose to cut him while he was retired. He was then able to return to the league later as a free agent.

Okay, there are actually two "buts" for retirements. When a player retires, the team has the option to pursue the return of a portion of the signing bonus equal to the unplayed portions of the contract, and that money is no longer counted against the salary cap. This is typically done through an arbitrator. This is known as the "Barry Sanders Rule" because this is exactly how the situation played out in his case, as he was required to pay back a portion of his bonus. The difference between now and then is there was no precedent when Sanders played; now, it's explicitly written into the CBA to allow for this arbitration.

Romo just became most every team's future QB in case of injury.

Yes, but once he retires the Cowboys WILL allocate the dough they were going to pay Romo elsewhere. Then in 3 months when he gets the itch and un-retires the Cowboys won't have the cap space and will be forced to release him (or other key contributors to get enough cap space). They will end up releasing him then.

If Romo is really retiring, did the price for JG just go up?

Perhaps. Houston may make a big push for him now.

His TV contract allows him to get out of the deal if he wants to play according to reports.

it is all a way to get out of the contract.

and yes I think this raises the Jimmy G price tag.

I hate Romo for the simple fact that he's a Cowboy, which led to insane knob polishing over the years, but he's always seemed like a decent enough guy and I LOVE his DirecTV commercial.

Hoping that this is real, would hate to see him end up carried off the field to end it.

THIS JUST IN: Tony Romo injured after tripping during walk to podium to announce retirement. Broadcasting career put on hold.

Romo will be released by the Cowboys today

The move will be designated as a post-June 1 cut, allowing the Cowboys to disperse the cap hit over the next two seasons. The necessary paperwork has been sent in to the league office, Todd Archer of ESPN.com hears (Twitter link).
