Rd 1, #29 - Cole Strange, IOL, Chattenooga

Jeez I just watched a clip of strange getting manhandled by Travis jones at the senior bowl. Jones ended up going in the third to the ravens.
It looks awful.

One rep, one solitary rep in isolation against one guy whilst playing in his non-preferred position of Center.

I'm sure I could find plenty of videos of other guys getting beat on one rep and use that as evidence that X guy sucks.

Thanks for the clip. One interesting note from Strange was that he had 6 OL coaches during his time in Chattanooga. This is something Bill seems to like
to see in future Patriots; a player who performs well without an ideal, consistent structure around him. Perhaps it indicates a certain ability to overcome
adversity and adapt to whatever is asked of him while continuing to move forward.

After watching a bunch of clips, I'd say his best attribute is that he is exceptionally quick out of his stance and can beat his opponent to a spot where he
can gain leverage. It sounds simple, but not many come into the league with that skill. He is also excellent in space and has a knack for turning a guy away
from the hole and keeping him out of the play. I think the area he will need to focus on to become a good pro is adding some mass and core strength to help
him anchor better in pass pro. How he handles bull rushes might tell the story of how far he can develop this season, because he's not Mike Onwenu in that
department. Everybody has something that needs improvement.

Those are all reasons why I think he can be a similar player to Joe Thuney, although he has better length to prevent guys from getting into his chest and
latching on and gaining control. Strange's ability to quickly and accurately land a hit and then steer guys in space is eerily similar to Joe and that
bodes well for his future success.

I saw that also, but want to watch the Senior Bowl game to see if those poor reps matter. The Dline have a big advantage in those drills and it may have been unusual for Strange to be snapping.

As an aside, why did Jones go in the third round? What you saw from Jones in that drill could be the best he looks. Jones's game reminds me of Mike Ruth a little bit.

BB should have drafted him actually...he's fairly decent.

Hey, I get it. It was one rep, in a one on one situation.
But it’s against legit NFL competition, not whoever Chattanooga happens to be playing. Jones didn’t just beat him he manhandled him.

My understanding is that he tore up the Senior Bowl, with the EXCEPTION of Jones being a bad matchup for him. This can just happen sometimes, where Player A just owns Player B (because of how specific traits/skills/gaps match up, or just a mental block) for a period of time, even though they're evenly matched or even when Player B seems like he should have the advantage.

Anyone remember the Pacers always being an outsider PITA because Bird seemed to struggle with Chuck Person guarding him? So frustrating, though typically the Celtics overall team was better by a wide enough margin that it wasn't going to sink a playoff series.

There are other cases like this, but they're eluding me.

Any December game in Miami.....

Jeez, I just watched a clip of Strange stoning Travis Jones at the Senior Bowl.

It's the first rep. Watch that and get back to me.

EDIT: I really don't want to come off as a smartass, because I made the same mistake last week. I wish I could see every rep without watching endless clips, but,
in general Travis Jones tossed almost everybody around at one point or another and got stuffed at other times. I apologize, for being a dick.

i thought it was freeney? but early on moreso.

Light ended up doing a great job on Freeney even when he was dominating, as far as I recall. I don't
have any stats to back that up, but it was much discussed back in the day.

The two guys that killed him were, Jason Taylor, as mentioned, and John Abraham of the Jets. Abraham
was a good pass rusher, but he looked all-world whenever he played Light.

While the draft is still fresh in people's minds, Matt Light and Sebastian Vollmer were two guys that had
really similar reactions to what Cole Strange generated, but both had great careers and outplayed tons of guys
who got the Sportswriters Seal of Approval during their respective years.

I think Vollmer was ranked as the 19th best tackle in 2009. We took him at 58 and people howled.

The Tackles drafted ahead of him were Jason Smith (2), Andre Smith (6), Eugene Monroe (8), Michael Oher (23), Eben Britton (39) and Phil Loadholt (54).

Of those guys, only Big Mike Oher was comparable to Vollmer and that was because of Sandy Bullock. Tennessee burnt orange was not in her color wheel.
