Celtics

On paper, this is definitely a team that can and should contend for a title based on their depth alone.
The problem is that Mezzola doesn't understand the concept of subbing. He's got 15 guys and subs 3. WTF?? If I owned the C's my first question after game one to him is: In 30 seconds or less give me the name of your players. First thing that would eat up 29 seconds is trying to figure out what a bench is.

still trying to figure out what happened to Muscala. The Celtics have the bench to run 10 deep in their rotations. And why did they sign Griffin if they weren't going to play him? Between those two you have 12 fouls to use to beat on Adebayo and wear him down.

This is a super-reductive simple take on it, but it's not wrong.

Blake Griffin can't give you 10 minutes? Their bench got them to the playoffs, an yes, shrinking the bench is pretty standard fare, but it took him 6 fucking games to put Robert Williams in with Average Al. Payton Pritchard can't get 5 minutes of run? Luke Cornet gave you 6-8 minutes a night, but now you're gonna play 90-year old Average Al for 46 minutes? It's kind of crazy.

That was the Heat's worst shooting performance (43.6%) of the series. In game 2 - a game the C's should have won going away - they were also pretty mortal, shooting 45.7%, but the Celtics let them off the hook by only shooting 46.8% themselves, while turning the ball over more and missing some key free throws.

Last night the Celtics shot over 50% and won the turnover battle (with 8 blocks along the way) but they were dreadful at the FT line, missing 6 of 18 shots (which is magnified by the fact Miami went to the line 10 more times, but thanfully missed 5 shots of their own).

The Celtics played just "ok" considering what was on the line. I will give them a B-. Grant Williams has long been in my doghouse and he is far from a perfect player but at least he is showing heart and fight. Robert Williams seems to have fallen off defensively and that is not ideal but it was nice to see them move Al inside more last night and he had 7 rebounds to show for it. Little adjustments, boys... little adjustments.

Where the hell was that kind of play the first 3 games? It was nice to see them finally put up a fight and force a game 5 in Boston. They ratcheted up their play in the 2nd half and never looked back, now do that for the next game and who knows, maybe that current streak of nobody ever winning a playoff series when being down 3-0 will end this playoff season, it's bound to happen eventually, why not this year.

The game turned on simple defensive focus in the 3rd quarter. Overall they played just okay, but they were able to take control by focusing on defense.

You love your low hanging fruit and your hanging curveballs? Me too.

Cheers

my strategy of not watching seemed to work, deciding whether or not to watch game 5

When Larry Bird stole Isaiah Thomas' in-bounds pass in 1987, I missed it because I got pissed off when the Celtics didn't score and turned the ball over and left the room. I also wasn't watching last night, but I watched the rest of the series in '87, so hope I'm safe tuning back in for game 5.
