The Patriots announced the signing of receiver Jabar Gaffney today and the release of defensive lineman Johnathan Sullivan and cornerback Hank Poteat.

Gaffney was one of four receivers to work out for the Patriots recently. I wonder what is wrong with Chad Jackson?

Sullivan was a low-risk signing. Didn't work out. Oh well.

Poteat's a good soldier. But obviously the coaches think the DBs will be all healed up in two weeks.

Gaffney was a heralded pick and I'm sure he's a low-money signing, so it's worth a shot and brings the WR corps back up to five.

As for "what's wrong with Chad Jackson"... :donkeys:

Sullivan said the other day that he didn't have a game uniform - just practice gear. I guess he wasn't kidding.

PATRIOTS SIGN VETERAN FREE AGENT WR JABAR GAFFNEY;
RELEASE DL JOHNATHAN SULLIVAN AND DB HANK POTEAT

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots signed fifth-year wide receiver Jabar Gaffney today. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Gaffney will wear number 10 for the Patriots. Additionally, the team announced the release of two players - defensive lineman Johnathan Sullivan and defensive back Hank Poteat.

Gaffney, 25, spent his first four NFL seasons with the Houston Texans (2002-05) and has played in 64 career games with 50 starts. The 6-foot-1-inch, 205-pound wide receiver has recorded 171 career receptions for 2,009 yards and seven touchdowns, and was a regular starter for Houston in each of his four seasons with the club. Last season with the Texans, he finished second on the team with a career-high 55 receptions for 492 yards and two touchdowns while playing in all 16 games with 13 starts. In 2004, he finished second on the team with a career-high 632 receiving yards on 41 catches, totaling two touchdowns while starting 12 of 16 games. His single-game career highs are 10 receptions (at Seattle on Oct. 16, 2005) and 109 receiving yards (at Chicago on Dec. 19, 2004). The University of Florida product was selected by the Texans in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an unrestricted free agent on March 16, 2006 and was released in the final preseason roster cutdown on Sept. 2, 2006.

Sullivan, 25, was placed on the gameday inactive list for each of New England’s five games this season after being acquired via trade from the New Orleans Saints in exchange for wide receiver Bethel Johnson on June 6, 2006. The defensive lineman was originally selected by the New Orleans Saints with the sixth overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft and has played in 36 career games with 17 starts. The University of Georgia product has recorded 102 career tackles, including 1.5 sacks, four passes defensed and a forced fumble.

Poteat, 28, was initially acquired by the club as a free agent signing on the eve of the 2004 playoffs and was re-signed as a free agent on Sept. 27, 2006. Poteat has played in two games with one start for the Patriots this season. The 5-foot-10-inch, 192-pound cornerback is in his sixth NFL season and has played in 54 career regular-season games and seven playoff games for the Pittsburgh Steelers (2000-02), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2003) and Patriots (2004-06). The University of Pittsburgh product was originally drafted by the Steelers in the third round (77th overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft. He was released by the Patriots on Aug. 29, 2006 before being re-signed late last month.

They cut two players, so I wonder who else they are planning on adding to the roster?

So the WR corps is now "Florida North."

R.Caldwell
Jackson
Gaffney

All they need to do now is draft Caldwell's little brother this spring. :p

If Brady can make these guys shine, then all the haters will HAVE to shut up.

I mean, seriously, when was the last SUCCESSFUL WR to come out of UF?

does anyone think the Colts will take a run at Johnathan Sullivan to fit the big hole left by Corey Simon?

does Big Sully know the Pats playbook?

a.) Probably.
b.) I doubt Sullivan even knows what the playbook looks like.

Gaffney has a gun problem

Just found this out on Sportsline.

In June, Gaffney was arrested following a traffic stop in New Jersey for unlawful possession of a handgun. Gaffney was registered to carry the weapon in Texas, but not New Jersey. His attorney said Gaffney would apply for a first-time offenders' program in which the charges would eventually be dismissed, but the outcome of the case was not immediately known Monday.

He was cut by the Eagles. Perhaps this was the reason.

Getting caught for carrying an illegal handun in Jersey is like getting caught in Boston for jaywalking. :D

The only crime Gaffney committed was being stupid enough to get pulled over, LOL. If you did a random car stop in the NY/NJ area you'll come up with a gun more often than not...

I think the important point is he was registered in Texas where he had lived for several years. It is natural to assume that what is legal in one state is in another, even though that is often not the case.

Also, he got pulled over and cooperated instead of pulling a KRob and driving off at over 100mph.

Darrell Jackson (SEA) is probably the best of the UF receivers, followed by Ike Hilliard.

Others include Reidel Anthony, Jacquez Green, Chris Doering, Willie Jackson, Travis Taylor, and Taylor Jacobs.

Anthony and Green had decent careers for a short while.

Travis Taylor was supposed to be the exception to the "system WR" knock against UF receivers. Total bust.

Gaffney was the next UF reciever that was supposed to break the mold.

Caldwell, who was drafted the same year as Gaffney, was also supposed to be "different."

Both had okay numbers in HOU and SD respectively, but neither showed the gamebreaking ability they were supposed to have.

Jacobs was one of the last of Spurrier's recruits before he left UF, and he (as with Taylor, Gaffney, and Caldwell before him) was supposed to be different than others, and Spurrier drafted him for the Skins. He lasted only 3 yrs in Washington, and has a grand total of 315 career yards.

Jackson wasn't recruited by Spurrier....he was a Zook guy. Zook was supposed to be a great recruiter, but he sucks as a gameday coach. Will Jackson be different than the Spurrier WRs? That remains to be seen.

Little bro Caldwell is also a Zook guy, but he's slotted to be the playmaker to replace Jackson in Meyer's offense this year. So far, he's got 21 catches for 188 yards, and 3 TDs on the year. He's been a non-factor in the rushing game. Clearly, we're gonna have to wait for a full recruiting cycle to see what Meyer can do at UF.

Ike Hilliard. Not a star but 400+ receptions and 5000+ yards.

So I'll ask again...does this mean Chad Jackson is a bust? Cuz, for the 32nd player taken in the draft...I would have assumed he was ready for the NFL...especially when combined with the fact that we are are in sorry shape at wideout and no rec. that can stretch the field and defenses are taking advantage by putting 8-10 in the box with the safety playing 12 yards off the ball and they are killing our running game and tying up Watson and Faulk for the short passing game.

The Miami game proved this out. I watched the safety the whole game and he was never more than 12 yards off the ball and more often than not they had 10 just about in the box...sometimes just outside of it. We need a speedy wideout who can burn up the field with a corner in pursuit while drawing that friggin safety with him.

In the immortal words of the Beaver...

"Gee golly Mr. Belicheck, can Chad come out and play?"

Darrell Jackson is better than Hilliard was.

Jackson - 6+ years (incl '06)

400 rec, 5782 yards, 40 TD, 14.5 ypr

Hilliard - 9+ years (incl '06)

414 rec, 5015 yards, 28 TD, 12.1 ypr

For some reason, nobody ever associates D.Jackson with Florida......probably because he doesn't suck, and/or didn't have a lot of hype coming into the league.

It is difficult to tell about the wide receivers as Belichick wants to run the ball so much this year. Even when the run game was taken away by Denver and Miami the Patriots still ran more running plays than passes. Give Brady a chance. Throw the friggin ball.
