Grif Whalen signed by the Patriots

I mean, the film on him looks decent. Could be good in the return game and provide depth at WR, but I'm not getting too excited. If he was a legit threat I'd imagine someone would have had him on their roster by now.

BB rarely likes the popular guys...:coffee:

I don't understand what was wrong with him. He was better than pretty good.

Eh, he wasnt that good at all actually...he was better than Harper, but, that isn't saying much.

If you're comparing him to Edelman, no, but he caught 65% of passes thrown his way for an 11 ypc average, returned 8 punts for 92 yards - a very respectable 10.5 ypa, was a decent blocker downfield, and never fumbled once.

Who out there available do you like better?

I know he's ancient but Devin Hester was cut by the Ratbirds yesterday.

Devin Hester isn't coming here and Jones isn't getting cut. It's way too early to give up on that kid, I think he's going to be good.

Both would have already happened by now, I think at this point. Plus, they signed Griff Whalen for PRs IMO and some WR depth. Hopefully he gets up to speed and is active this weekend.

I'm sick and tired of the Devin Hester talk, both here and on the talk radio

Devin Hester is 34 years old.

Let me repeat that.

Devin Hester is 34 years old.

Do you know how many players on the Patriots are 34 years old or older? 1. He wears #12.

But Bill Belichick is going to bring in a 34-year-old return specialist...who can do absolutely nothing else on the field anymore.

Bill Belichick.

He's gonna do this.

Sure he is. Right.

This is beyond the usual 'X was cut we should totally sign him, VET MINIMUM' bullshit that makes me want to tear my hair out. Dude can't play anymore. You may as well sign Dave Meggett. He'll give you just as much. :coffee:

Devin Hester: 34 and 5 fumbles Devin Hester

Surely he'll be an upgrade. :coffee:
IF I am reading youse two correctly, you mean a late season signing like say... um... Stephen Jackson is not going to turn around that part of the team?

Interesting, I will need to digest this and will allow you to comment.

thanks for taking my call.

1. I'm all set with Hester. They have plenty of personnel currently in place to fill the role of PR/KR. I'm confident it will get straightened out. They already signed Griff Whalen, as the thread title and topic suggests that the role has been filled

2. Jackson was brought in because they needed a body IIRC. RB position is entirely different.

3. I don't remember people going crazy to "sign Jackson immediately" like they are with Hester.

Honestly, I just don't understand why the Pats just can't put somebody back there, make a fair catch, and let the offense do its thing. Punt returns for TDs are few and far between and the Patriots have done a good job in winning the field position battle anyway, including last year.

Stephen Jackson, right now, would give you more in the return game than Devin Hester.

So let's just stay with the status quo and hold our collective breath every time the ball leaves the kicker/punter's foot.

You act like Devin Hester's been balling out in Baltimore this year.

He's got 5 fumbles this year, 4 on punt returns, and his unwillingness to field punts led to the Patriots downing it twice at the 1 yard like, once leading to a safety.

We cut Chris Harper last year, already. We don't need to sign his 34 year old doppleganger. :coffee:

It's odd that this is even a question. Jones is a rookie and playing like one. I think at this point all that matters is how hard he's working and how coachable he is. I don't know, but I surmise that he's working very hard because BB keeps putting him out there fumble after fumble. He also played quite a bit of CB and kicking the punted ball.

Give him an offseason. Look how guys like Givens improved after an offseason with a JUGS machine

Regarding punt returners. Recent events show that attempting to return punts by the Pats results in too many fumbles or injuries to key players. Instead of picking up yet another risky FA, what if the Pats were to rush the whole team on punts and go for a block? If it doesn't happen, at least no fumble/injury. Just sayin'.
