There's a line in some of the older Madden games on the N64 where John Madden says "back in the day they used to put stick em on their hands to catch those balls, now they got those gloves!"

Hell his coach walked over in front of the can of spray so the ref could not see it and it was all on video....I think he and the team were more than generally aware.
