Pats at Jets: Official Game Thread

Reiss puts this win into perspective.

We discussed it after the game, the way Bill seemed so chipper at the presser. He was nearly smiling, polite with the reporters, gave good answers etc. It's a recurring thing. A game where us as fans are tearing our hair out and nearly suicidal, but the team still comes through to win, are the games Bill seems to love and always appears upbeat afterwards!!

As Reiss says, it games like that where the team has to really fight through adversity, where injuries hit and the team is playing badly, that a team shows it's character and mental toughness and we know that's what Bill rates so highly and puts so much importance on.

I think he would have been very pleased at the contribution of the defense. Now the rest of us were in a rage seeing some of the plays allowed, but they did get that huge turnover from Butler and then the Long strip as well and I think that's what Bill was delighted with, that they came through and played a major role in the win. Plus the blocked FG.

The announcers mentioned it, the D is not stellar in a lot of areas stats wise but the one crucial one, points allowed, they're 3rd in the league. I suspect that's the most important one for Bill. Keep the opposition low on points, let the defense make c**p QBs appear like HOFers but don't break and keep the offenses to FGs at most in the redzone and then let Tom and co do the rest when they have the ball.

Sure doesn't help the blood pressure of us fans though watching them....

Here are the snap counts from the Patriots 22-17 victory over the Jets.
The Patriots offensive line played the entire game

LT Nate Solder, LG Joe Thuney, OC David Andrews, RG Shaq Mason, and RT Marcus Cannon played all 73 offensive snaps, as did QB Tom Brady. The stability on the offensive line has done wonders for the pass protection and the run blocking. OT Cameron Fleming played 15 snaps (21%) as an extra blocker.
WR Malcolm Mitchell played less than you might have thought

WR Chris Hogan (67, 92%), WR Julian Edelman (66, 90%), and TE Martellus Bennett (58, 79%) played most of the game, especially as TE Rob Gronkowski (7, 10%) left with a back injury. But WR Malcolm Mitchell (34, 47%) was a rotational player with FB James Develin (25, 34%) and WR Danny Amendola (17, 23%). Maybe Mitchell will see a larger role moving forward.
The Patriots gave their running backs even snaps

RB LeGarrette Blount (27, 37%), RB James White (26, 36%), and RB Dion Lewis (23, 32%) played even splits. Blount actually played more than most would have expected since the Patriots typically give just 20% of snaps to running backs that can’t catch the ball against the Jets.

I think we can expect a fairly even split with this trio moving forward with some variation based on defensive strengths.
LB Dont’a Hightower is back as a full time starter

One week after rotating in and out of the roster, Hightower played all 57 defensive snaps. He was paired with LB Shea McClellin (31, 54%), LB Kyle Van Noy (28, 49%), and LB Elandon Roberts (4, 7%). McClellin and Van Noy have actually been pretty solid the past two weeks with McClellin stopping the run and Van Noy playing on passing downs. Roberts had a nice tackle for loss in his short number of snaps.
The secondary has settled down on a starting five

SS Patrick Chung (57, 100%), CB Malcolm Butler (57, 100%), CB Eric Rowe (56, 98%), and FS Devin McCourty (56, 98%) were the starters, with CB Logan Ryan (44, 77%) as the nickel against the Jets receivers. FS Duron Harmon (19, 33%) played a reduced role since the Jets don’t use tight ends in the receiving game. S Nate Ebner played one snap.

Jabaal Sheard returned to the defensive end rotation

Trey Flowers (36, 63%) led defensive ends, ahead of Rob Ninkovich (32, 56%) and Chris Long (30, 53%). Sheard only played 25 snaps (44%), but it’s a good sign that he’s back in the rotation and he did a good job in his limited time. Both McClellin and Van Noy also contribute on the edge as the Patriots favored a 5-1 front.
Vincent Valentine played an expanded role at defensive tackle

DT Malcom Brown (36, 63%) and DT Alan Branch (35, 61%) continue to play a high number of snaps, but rookie Vincent Valentine (23, 40%) doubled his typical usage. Valentine needed the experience as Branch might be suspended and Valentine will have to step up into a starting role.
The following players saw 15+ snaps on special teams:

LB Shea McClellin (22), ED Geneo Grissom (22), S Nate Ebner (21), CB Jonathan Jones (18), S Brandon King (17), RB Brandon Bolden (17), LB Barkevious Mingo (17)

I think Rowe had one good pass break up? Was that the one where he was lucky to not get called as he tackled the receiver first?

Tom Brady has won the internet for the day. Nobody else even needs to try. Maybe tomorrow.

The Jets are obviously well coached in not destroying the Pats QB when they legally can. They don't want another "Mo Lewis Day" celebrated in NE.

Have to give the Jets defenders credit there, they absolutely could have pummelled Brady there as a blocker, he was a legit target. But they didn't, I think they were too busy laughing to be honest...

But I can think of other teams who would have taken his head off.

plus you hit Brady and he takes you out, you are the highlight "Lowlight" of the next 5 years of Film sessions.

As I watched that play and I saw Brady start out in front of Blount, I thought to myself - Here it comes, he's gonna get himself killed. I even thought - well, at least we have a healthy back-up. But then, absolutely nothing happened. I was more than surprised, to say the least.

I think BB will have a talk with Brady about that play and tell him that we're not in the playoffs just yet, save that business for when the season hangs in the balance. Next time I'm hoping Brady just gets in the way a little and gets to the ground in a balled up position. Pretty sure he won't be so lucky again.

Yeah, he shouldn't do that against the Ravens for sure.

Still, let's give Tom a little credit for not getting killed. He seems to have employed his recently upgraded pocket manuevers to negotiate his way untouched through a tricky assortment of green jerseys.

The Jets seem to be taking some flak for not taking the free hit on Tom..As per Rich Cimini.

Bowles had no issues with it. Fair play to him....

The Jets are taking some flak for passing up a free shot at Tom Brady, who unexpectedly found himself in the role of lead blocker on a reverse-field run by LeGarrette Blount. The Jets didn't lay a hand on the Patriots' QB, who played on a sore knee. Coach Todd Bowles said he had no problem with the approach. "I want them to tackle the guy with the ball, not the guy without the ball," he said. Don't think Rex Ryan would've said the same thing.

It was like watching one of those youtube videos where the guy walks out into traffic and somehow every car misses him.
