Interesting article in the New York Times. It's a short article, and is chiefly concerned with injuries that take place in the NFL.

The thesis proposed is that as safety equipment becomes better, people become used to the safety margin, and start taking higher risks. The end result is that there is no net reduction in injuries over time, despite the introduction of ever-advanced equipment designed with safety in mind.

There's a similar ptinciple that happens in highway construction and city planning. The more highways that are built to try to reduce traffic, the more people choose to use them if available. So there's little to no net reduction in traffic jams and commuting time.

It extends to most things. My first computer, a Sinclair before Timex bought them, had an operating system of 2K ROM. This 2K included a basic word processor and a database. It also had 2K of RAM built in, but I needed more, so I spent almost $200 for a 2K RAM pack.

The reverse holds true. When I was working and had 4 weeks vacation, I enjoyed them to the max. I flew to where i was going, ate out every meal, and did as much as I could in my week. Now, retired, I have all the time in the world, but much less money. I drive to where I'm going if it's less expensive, eat cereal in my room, picnic lunch, and inexpensive dinner out on the road. I try to stay in places that have kitchens and spend more time strolling and doing free things. Use my abundant resource (time) and hoard my restricted resource (money).

How was the online porn back then? :coffee:

I don't think so. Since they started using cups, no player has tried to use his dick to tackle or block another player.

Always felt Equipment, specifically the helmet/face mask, was bad for the sport.

IIRC, the face mask was introduced so the player on the bottom of the pile wouldn't drown in the mud/water before they got everyone off of him.

It would keep their mouth and nose off the ground.

Not sure that's really a risk anymore with the way the game is played and the fields they play on.

Like ancient Olympic athletes. The sport should be played nude.

I joke but I do think Equipment is now used as a weapon not a protective devise. Limit it so the improper technique eliminates itself.

Apparently, serious injuries occur far less frequently, if ever, in rugby (with virtually no protective gear) than in football.

Rules of the game. Launching, I believe, is illegal. Tackling is different. I wish we had Rugby in my hood as a kid. I hate Equipment. I was More or a bareknuckles type when younger.
