Week 14: Gronk vs Watt

He's a 3-4 End, which is an inside the tackles position. He plays DT in a 4-3.

That's not true. They play him at all the positions and they frequently line him up outside the tackles when they are in their sub packages.

Why?

We're not paying $100+ mil contracts to DL guys.

It'd be nice to get him if we could. Judging by his rep, he's more than worth it. He'd make our D that much better. He'll, maybe even put him on offense instead. I'm sure Bill could find use for him on either side. He's definitely a force on both sides.

Well they're not going to have a spelling bee...

They may meet up on the line but if Houston wants to try to cover Gronk with Watt, yes please, all day.

With any luck, it will be akin to a matter and anti-matter reaction.

Do you deny he's as good as they say?

Do you always answer questions with questions?

He's a very good player. The idea that Romeo Crennel would ever put him purposely in one-on-one coverage with any top-tier tight end, is laughable.

So, is he your cousin or something?

Probably because he knows that such a scenario playing out would create a spacetime singularity. And that would be bad for the L. Integrity, etc. :coffee:

Why? Especially why against Gronk?

The NFL is very specialized. While Watt is a gifted athlete and might be able to do some limited pass coverage, it is not something that defensive linemen generally do. Natural athletic ability can only take you so far - you need training and repetitions as well. Brady would be VERY successful throwing to Gronk if for some reason Watt was covering him 1-on-1, just like Watt would be VERY successful if Gronk was asked to block him 1-on-1 every play.

Player positions are specialized and there are not too many scenarios where defensive linemen are going against tight ends 1-on-1.

Am I right in thinking that the OP is suggesting that a massive threat to Brady is used instead to cover the best receiving TE in the NFL, thereby neutralising his ability to F**** Brady up? Does he instead propose to have him in pass coverage?

Against the O line in this form, JJ Watt should be told to pin his ears back on every down and pass rush.
