Cam Newton released!

I'm not. Zolak was harping on about Cam listening to "Rap" music in between reps. It was a bad look, he's never had a go at other players listening to "music". He knew he fucked up as he apologised and spoke directly to Newton about it. When you look at Zo's history, someone pulled up his tweets from 2011 where he was having bizarre rants at Newton for whatever reason and then you take his comments on Russell Wilson as being "the worst starting quarterback in the NFL" and "he isn't even a quarterback" in 2012.

It's not a good look.
Yeah, it was just stupid of him to say. I don't think Zo is a racist, I think he's just dumb sometimes. But I could be wrong. I don't know the man personally obviously.

It's crazy how the race thing was never an issue until it was our QB though. We've had so many beloved African American players on this team in our history and I've never heard a peep about race. But when it's the QB I guess it's different because he's the face of the franchise? I admit that I was wary to criticize Cam for fear of being called a racist because so many people would jump to that conclusion. (Not here, I'm saying the fandom in general) I just thought he sucked on the field and I always thought he was arrogant and cocky, and that's not the Patriot way. (And I admit having heard reports from other fans and his teammates it would seem he was able to keep most of that in check while he was here, so I was wrong about the arrogant and cocky part.)

If you asked me to name which player in the history of the franchise has most epitomized what it means to be a Patriot I'd say it's Matthew Slater. The man is a wonderful player and an even better person and I admire him greatly. His work in the community is second to none, and I think the vast majority of Patriots fans would say the same thing. He is someone I see as a role model.

I'm just curious if any of my Caucasian brothers and sisters here felt the same way. I just long for the day when none of that garbage matters. All I can do is be the change I want to see in the world and, like Dr. King said, Judge people not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

No. That is NOT what Zo was harping about.

You are focused on rap music when he was talking about not paying attention, not showing leadership, not trying to learn and set an example. Had he been listening to Chariots of Fire and prancing around the field the point would be the same. It just happened to be rap. So what.

Saying he knew he fucked up and apologized is missing the point. He fucked up all right. He somehow failed to realize that there would be people like you that will jump anything and call it racist. That was dumb on his part for sure. The apology is simply a result of the fact he knew this would be blown up into what it isn't and he would lose his job over it. He was pragmatic.

Coddled by the media?! Sweet Jesus, the man has gotten savage reporting over the years. The SB loss was pinned on him and him alone and he's never been allowed to forget it. His dress sense, personality, even Zolak was having a go at him for listening to Rap music.
The vast majority of the BSM kissed his ass for the entire time he was here.

I said I didn't think he was a racist, read again.....

A- Your did not say your didn't think it.

B- You did spend the entire post implying it.

But, whatever. I am only helping your create it so I am out of this topic.

There's plenty of speculation for the reasons he was released. His anti-vax stance is a reason that is getting prominently mentioned.
I can't help but wonder how many other players will be released today in part for the very same reason.
What about natural immunity? Cam had covid so he has antibodies which quite frankly are better then the vaccine ..... I listen to the Yale Drs I work with

This is why I said this belongs in the political forum. There are various views some are being shut out.... not gonna lie Yale is far more liberal then me....

But still love ya and I believe in science as well

The afternoon that Cam was released I caught a football TV show that had Marcellus Wiley, Emmanuel Acho, Torrey Smith and others weighing in. Wiley is really excellent and always has an interesting slant on all things NFL. They were all black guys and I kept waiting for one of them to bring up racism as a factor, but none of them chose to pluck that low-hanging fruit. The general consensus was that they didn't like the Patriots, they don't like Belichick, but they respected the decision and conceded that Cam, as much as they like and respect him, has had better days which is what anybody that understands the game should think.

The only thing they were confused by is the fact that he was released, which is understandable because nobody really knows for sure what went down there.

I wouldn't have been shocked if racism came up in that conversation as a contributing factor, but I wouldn't have cared if it did. I'm not blind or deaf. That narrative will get little to no traction outside of the Boston sports talk sandbox, nor should it, because, in this case, it's really stupid to believe it was any factor at all.

I WISH Cam was better. I WISH he had better success here and would have preferred Mac to hold a clipboard for a while, but Newton was given every opportunity and couldn't get the job done at the level we needed it done. Period.

We're on to McCorkle.

He got cut because he was outplayed, and significantly, in the entire preseason and because he very likely didn't want to be a back-up and/or BB knew it wouldn't be in Mac's or the team's best interests for him to remain as the back-up. As far as the Covid issue is concerned, I'd suspect it was a factor but I don't know for certain. But, I believe vaxxed or un-vaxxed Cam wasn't going to be the starter.
