Tribes claim wind farm would destroy sacred ritual 11/2/2009 8:22:00 AM

By JAY LINDSAY
MASHPEE, Mass. - From a blustery perch over a Cape Cod beach, Chuckie Green gestures toward a stretch of horizon where he says construction of the nation's first offshore wind farm would destroy his Indian tribe's religion.

The Wampanoag - the tribe that welcomed the Pilgrims in the 17th century and known as "The People of the First Light" - practice sacred rituals requiring an unblocked view of the sunrise. That view won't exist once 130 turbines, each over 400 feet tall, are built several miles from shore in Nantucket Sound, visible to Wampanoag in Mashpee and on Martha's Vineyard.

Tribal rituals, including dancing and chanting, take place at secret sacred sites around the sound at various times, such as the summer and winter solstices and when an elder passes.

The Wampanoag fight to preserve their ceremonies has become the latest obstacle - some say delay tactic - for a pioneering wind energy project that seemed at the cusp of final approval.

"We, the Wampanoag people, who opened our arms and allowed people to come here for religious freedoms, are now being threatened with our religion being taken away for the profits of one single group of investors," Green said.

I don't want one in Middleboro anyways. Too damn close to me. Foxwoods is perfect, too far to go all the time but close enough that it's just over an hour away.

I agree we need one in Massachusetts though....the money this State is losing to Ct. is staggering. And not just to the casinos, the ancillary money people spend at gas stations, Package Stores, convenience stores, hotels and restaurants outside of the resort/casino.

Fall River/New Bedford area would be perfect. It's poor as hell down there and unemployment is like 20-30% or some crazy figure like that.

he just might be reluctant to comment........

you could say he's got reservations :rimshot:

He just flew in from California.... and are his arms tired :rimshot:

(hey, RG isn't the only one that can dig up old lame jokes! :insane: )

North Berkshire county desperately needs a casino, but the morons who exist there will never vote one in. The business from NY that a casino would bring there would be amazing.

I think the Wamps have the right to complain about it, but its just another opinion to be taken into consideration. I live close enough to that Tribe that I could probably stumble upon one of their "secret locations", but I haven't heard any of the hundred of so Wampanoags here complain about this before. Trust me, they've got bigger problems than this.

ROFL at the need for a casino

Yeah, we NEED a place where people can sink further and further into debt.

EBF
The Indians have many places where they can go for an unobstructed view of the Sun rising in the East, besides they are being very selective in picking a spot should the wind farm actually interfere with it.

Welfleet, Chatham, Nauset, Provincetown ALL have unobstructed views of the sunrise.

I guess my point is even with the wind things, they can still see the Sun, right? Its not like they are building a dome over Mashpee. Im really surprised, though, that I haven't heard of this yet considering how close I am to their headquarters down here. Green, fwiw, is kind of the Wampanoag kook.

Yes but it needs to be unobstructed :Eason:

Like I said, they are being VERY selective about where they can have pow-wows

Dont know or care about the one on the south shore. I hope they never get one. Like I said. The Berkshires NEEDS one. The locals here mostly will not use the place, they will derive their livelihood from it!:thumb: It is those no good smelly disgusting MFNY'rs that will use it. I say hooray for another way to separate those a**holes from their money!:toast:

Went down to foxwoods on saturday. You do have to say, it is a nice place to get lost for a couple of days. But, the hell with the Injuns, the state needs the dough. Build it at Raynham.
