Looking at the Patriots - 2020

noooooo not jameis!!!

Why not? He only had a few more turnovers than Dak last year and Jameis made top WRs out of Mike Evans, 8th, and Chris Godwin, 2nd, last year. Per PFF, with TB12 those 2 are only 47th and 28th respectively this year. Just sayin'... ;)

Moved the last half dozen or so Brady posts out of the 2020 Patriots thread to the Brady thread.

Winston is an interception machine, no thanks.

Any QB outside the draft is going to come with question marks, it's the nature of the game. I'd go with Jimmy G if available. He just needs to be more pliable.

Darnold would have been an interesting option. Post Gase QBs have been known to find their game (see Tannehill, Ryan).

I haven't watched a college game this season because it's a stupid year, and I've never followed it enough to know who is good beyond the obvious so I'll just hope they have an eye on someone.

So Cam Newton:

We all know he's bad, 5 TDs, 10 Ints, 2415 yards through 14 games, passer rating of 78.9, with 5 games this year with a passer rating under 60. However, if you want a sure-fire indication Cam is not solely responsible for driving the wins and losses of the team, check this out:

Games where Cam has been Good (Passer rating 100+): vs MIA, BAL, @HOU. Pats went 2-1 in those games, managed to lose @HOU anyway.
Games where Cam has been Mediocre (Passer rating 80-100): @SEA, BUF, NYJ, LAC, MIA. Pats went 2-3 in those games
Games where Cam has been Bad (Passer rating under 80): vs LVR, DEN, SFO, ARI, BUF, @LAR. Pats went 2-4 in those games, winning vs Raider and Arizona anyway, despite the Arizona game being his worst, an absolutely horrific 9-18 with 0 TDs, 2 Ints, and a 23.6 Passer Rating.

Good teams can win in spite of bad QB play. Good teams take advantage of good QB play when they can get it. The Pats aren't particularly successful at either. Though it's easy to make Cam the scapegoat, because he's played terribly, the reality is that the Pats have glaring issues in every phase, and their wins and losses are obviously not coming down to Cam alone. Here's hoping they draft very well this year, and next season we can wash the taste of 2020 out of our mouths.

There are very few, if any, teams in the NFL that can win consistently without good QB play. This has been proven in spades over the past decade in particular when all the rules favor the offense. This year scoring was way up across the league most likely due to the no off-season due to Covid. The Pats were not a very good overall team but they had a great Oline and great run game and great secondary. Those pieces alone would have been good enough for a winning season and perhaps a WC if we just had competent QB play. We did not get that and here we are at 6-9. I really hope Bill moves on from Cam. That would be his first and most important personnel move.
