Preseason Game 1, 2016, Pats vs Saints

I thought Brissett looked good in the pocket. He showed good poise and the ball came out quickly. You can use him on roll outs and he has enough speed to pick up a first down when the defensive line loses contain. Now some of his passes were really off. But the guy barely gets any snaps in practice..

Some quick thoughts:

1) This defense is a MONSTER. An absolute beast. All Jimmy has to do is manage the game, not turn the ball over, don't take negative plays, punch it in when it is there. Otherwise punt, punt, punt and let this defense go to work.
2) Jimmy looked shaky at first but then settled in. I hope Bill starts him the rest of the preseason to let him continue to get used to the flow of real game action so he is razor sharp come Arizona.
3) I like Brissett and his skills but he is RAW. I would feel better if Bill signed a vet Qb as back up but am willing to wait and see how Brissett develops the rest of the preseason.
4) This team is DEEP. This is great news as if guys go down we have the depth to cover.

That's great news. Watching him gave me a flashback to McGahee in the Championship game 10-15 years ago.

It was similar to Rajon Rondo getting that injury in a Celtics game IIRC. Glad it wasn't worse, I cringed.

A few thoughts without the benefit of replay or analysis since I was in the stands:

  • The receivers sent out there on the 1st quarter were not getting any separation. JG had no one to pass to.
  • One of the sacks was through a wide open hole when Thuney went right and no one was there to cover the hole. Not sure if it was a missed assignment, poor call by JG or just good disguise by the Saints.
  • I really, really like Mitchell. Glad to hear he could be back in a few weeks.
  • I thought McClellan showed good things. On one screen, he tossed his blocker aside and forced the play back inside for no gain.
  • Justin Coleman was completely overmatched playing against the Saints top receiver.
  • Flowers is a beast, but we already knew that.
  • Blount will not make this team.

Blount was the most disappointing. No idea why we resigned him honestly. For people who thought he was going to regain his form from two years ago that went down the drain. It would seem Gaffney is going to be the between the tackles RB.

Cyrus Jones will be the third CB over Coleman I think.

I thought this too. You can get the same production out of Bolden, plus the ST tackles. Blount will be sent home and told to stay in shape in case Lewis gets hurt again.

JimmyG looked ok...
Mitchell looked pretty good until the elbow thing...
Derby and Brisket have chemistry...
The Pats look like they have a pass rush...
Gaffney looked decent enough...
White had a td...
Blount must have smoked a blunt before the game...

it's going to be a hot night

What about the weather?

Blount looked awful to me last night. On his TD he curled up like he didn't want to get hit. Watch the replay and see him turtle his way into the endzone.

What about the weather?

The heat/humidity had to affect the players. 100 degrees on the field at kickoff was brutal. My daughter and her new husband went to the game and left mid 3rd qtr bc of the heat. Both showered as soon as they got home. They said it was unbearable.

Jimmy G performed better than I expected in all phases except for his pocket presence. He'll get better at sensing pressure and getting rid of the ball or running with more experience. I thought Brissett's pocket presence was outstanding although he was going against 3rd/4th line players.

Chris Long allowed too many completions to the flats. He was slow to recognize the RB moving out there and was in an 'oh shit' trailing position. Teaching point for him.

STs was way below avg for a Patriots team. I saw BB coaching up the STs coach twice on the sideline.

Did you feel that breeze going over your head?

:Ohbaby:

It was uncomfortable, not sure about unbearable, I guess it depends on one's tolerance to heat. Oddly, the tailgate earlier in the evening was more comfortable. There was a brisk breeze going through the lots that kept it a bit more comfortable, that and the canopy I had for shade.

As we were heading in, the breeze just disappeared and that's when the humidity settled in. Yeah, I needed a shower as well.

Blount looked terrible. He's my candidate for the "I'm surprised he got cut" award

Agreed but at this point who would be surprised? BB will be able to pick up a released veteran after 1st cuts in 2 1/2 weeks if he thinks he needs to.

I was disappointed DJFoster didn't play. I'd like to see his burst and quickness translate to a game.

Speaking of burst, did it look like V'Angelo Bentley was running in sand on every return to anyone else? Did not seem to have the speed you want at KR.

He would be my least surprised candidate to get cut. I was more surprised that the Pats resigned him.
