The Fitness Thread

The gym I go to closed for a couple days to update some equipment so I'm going to give running a shot again and see if my knees feel any better after a couple weeks off. On another note, I quit drinking almost three months ago. It's not a permanent thing, just kind of a reset. I really thought that it would be the missing piece that would help me shed the last of the weight that I'm trying to lose. I'll be damned if I haven't lost a pound since then. :shrug-n2: I really don't feel much different either other than not having the occasional hangover. I definitely haven't missed those. :ROFLMAO:

Funny you brought the drinking thing up. There are 8 of us (4 couples) headed to Naples (yes we are still going) for the last week in Jan. We have all decided to go dry from Christmas Day until we all meet at DTW for the flight down. Flight is at 6am. We plan to start with bloody's (screwdriver for me) at the gate. 4 weeks of zero should make the first few quite an adventure. LOL. Going to be a LOOOOOOONG Day. Or, maybe a short one!

Yeah, it will be an adventure the next time I drink as well. I have my eyes on a Christmas brew fest that one of our local breweries is having. I want to take my son since he will be home on break so he can get used to tasting other beers besides Michelob Ultra and Busch Light. It was a beer fest that actually was the catalyst for me taking a break from drinking.

Officially falling to pieces. Hadn't ran in two weeks. Went out last night and put three miles in and I'm back to my knee killing me especially after I have sat for a while and stand back up. Headed in to see the doctor in an hour to see if I need to see a specialist. On top of that I pulled a muscle in my side while doing pull ups. 🤦‍♂️

Had an appointment yesterday with a physical therapist. Apparently I have Iliotibial band syndrome. He gave me a bunch of stretches to do and told me that I need to cut my distance down to where it doesn't bother me and then gradually work my way back up. Apparently a 46 year old needs to stretch before going on distance runs. Who knew? :ROFLMAO: We'll see how this goes.

I had that on my first AT thruhike attempt. Ended up going home because putting in short days was boring, and when I went back to 15 or so miles a day, it sidelined me again.

I got home and some serious stretching and it was all good after a month or so.

But yeah, the older you get the more stretching you need BUT the easier it is to hurt yourself stretching. At 75, it's more gentle stretching and more time stretching, plus warming up with dynamic stretches - not the bouncey feel-the-pull dynamic stretching, just gentle muscle movement with a five or so second pause at the top of the movement.

I walked three miles yesterday at a mall, then did two today. Break tomorrow and Saturday I might go for three again.

I hopped on one of the bikes at the gym yesterday to see how my knee felt with that. That was almost as boring as the treadmill. I managed 15 minutes which ended up being just over 5 miles on the 12 setting before I couldn't take it anymore. I decided to throw in a second arm/back day for the week.

Well, sprained my back, couldn't really move for a week. Everything I tried did meh, even doctor and a medication for 10 days. I am on week five since it occurred. So, damnit, gained what I lost and than some. 😡😡😡

It is still healing, taking a while to heal, but got back on my recumbent bike and lost 2 lbs this week. Baby steps. Losing weight from medication is extra hard to lose.

Still, frustrated.

I hear you on this. Been on steroids for my back 3 times in the last 6 weeks. One of the side effects is weight gain and man does it! Up 7-8 pounds. Now it is snowing outside like we are in the Yukon so walking is out for a while. headed to the gym at lunch!

Good news is that the weight gain is mostly water and after you get off the 'roids it should go away fairly quickly.

My weight gain is a product of me being on medications due to my illnesses for a while now. But none are steroids or in the same class.

OK. But you are going to kick ass on whatever. you need to do and get rid of it anyway. :lecture:

Back pain feels like a double-whammy - you have the pain and limitations of being ill, plus it interferes with the good things you do to try to stay fit.

Sometimes when I throw out my back a little Vitamin I helps (ibuprofen).

Ice and generic Blue Emu from the Dollar Store is what helps the most. I'm grateful that I don't have to lay down on the couch or bed and roll off to get off the couch or bed. I'm grateful that I can go up and down the stairs even if it's one step at a time. #Grateful for small things and #great posters here.

I have a bad back, used to drive a ton annually for a couple years. Chiropractic helps a bit. And a balky knee + achilles from basketball and other sports.

But I cut out beer and drinking since the spring and lost about 18 pounds just off that. Good luck to you 👍

Had my 6 month follow up with my doctor. The first one when I was off all of my meds. Blood pressure and overall cholesterol were still great. LDL had gone up some but he wasn't concerned at all. My knee is still bugging me so I'm not able to run regularly. Instead I have added a couple more days of weights. I have put on about three pounds the last few weeks. I'm not sure if I'm gaining weight from not running anymore or if I'm adding muscle from the two extra days of lifting. :shrug-n2:

Could be either but 3 pounds. Either way isn’t a big deal.

Like you, I can’t run anymore which is a real bummer for me. That 30 minutes on the treadmill every day at lunch was a stress reliever. My neck issues are just too much. I transferred over to a stationary bike and that is helping me keep from gaining any weight. Maybe try that?

I did try the bike a couple times. Anything stationary, bike or treadmill just isn't for me. I gotta be out in the air moving or I go insane. I was able to go out a couple days ago and run a mile and a half without any problem but the next morning was a different story. I'm hopeful that this means that I just need to rest it until the pain is gone and then ease up on the mileage. I didn't start having this problem until I started training for the 15k.

Has anyone started their new year fitness journey? I just passed a year of going to the gym still using my son's workout that he wrote up for me. It's funny. This is the first time where I was the gym "regular" and have to see the overflow of new people. I don't feel the disdain for all of them like some of the gym rats do. I'm just happy to see them giving it a go. I hope they keep it going but if not, I'll see them back in the gym next year. :ROFLMAO: I have recently been able to start running again. I was able to make it a full three miles the last time I went out and had no knee pain. I'll probably just keep it to that distance from here on out...until the 15k later this year...maybe.

agree, i like the new faces. we don't have many newbs@ my primary or secondary places. i got down to my goal late last year, but am afraid to weigh myself until the end of this month at least...🤣
my goal continues to be get better strength in my arms. i am using heavier weights in all my classes and if it limits reps, so be it. along with i always want to increase overall stamina and strength. i've lost, at least for now, the rebounding(mini trampoline) class i took on sundays. man that was a calorie burner. it was fast and fun. it's offered only during my workday now. though the instructor asked me yesterday if i'd take it on saturday. 🤔🤞
