Jeffrey Lurie walked up to Brady during early-practice warm-ups to chat with the quarterback. The Eagles' owner is a Boston native and grew up a Patriots fan. But it's not the New England teams of old he now admires. Lurie made it clear when he pursued two coaches with close ties to Patriots coach Bill Belichick this offseason that he wanted to emulate the success Belichick has had in New England. As much as that sounds like a no-brainer, guys like Pat Shurmur and Steve Spagnuolo still get hired as head coaches every year.
So Lurie went after Belichick's friend Chip Kelly and former Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien, now at Penn State, and ended up with the former. The close alliance between Belichick and Kelly led to this week's scrimmages before their preseason game and a chance for the Eagles to gauge themselves against one of the best.
And predictably, they paled in comparison. There were times when Brady looked as if he was playing chess and Vick and Foles were swapping turns at checkers. That's not entirely fair to either Eagles quarterback as they continue to learn an entirely new offensive system.
But the Eagles got a glimpse of the gap, and it's significant.
