The NFL Draft, 2022

Good point - those high first round picks were absurd and a top five pick that didn't work out was a team buster, but I still think when you get past the few true impact players in any year's draft and into the homogenous mass of roughly equal players, trading back makes far and away the most sense. Now or then.

I agree. Why not get 2 players instead of 1?

Lloyd is light and that bothers me. He's only 12-15 lbs heavier than Dugger and Dugger is already a Patriot with a lot of experience.
I would say that about Dean, but not Lloyd. Actually if you look at the other speedy LB in the draft, they are all about the same size, Harris, Muma, Smith, and Walker. The 250+ LB are mostly slower, thumper types.

Roman Phifer isn't walking through that door.

Mike Reiss brings a lot of truths for the draft in his Sunday am Quick Hits article today.

A typically solid job from the dependable Reiss. Always factual and never resorts to the usual Boston media shenanigans to boost his hits.

That said, I was disappointed that he didn't mention a candidate to fill the biggest hole on our roster-- a starting caliber Guard, who Alec Lindstrom is
not at this point. Nice kid and a good player, but he's right out of the Andrews/Ferentz prototype size-wise and might need some time in program to
hold up against NFL linemen. He is experienced and seems like a good developmental lower-round guy, but we need a capable guard even worse than
a Corner or a Linebacker, imo, unless mystery-man Drew Desjarlais is way better than his Canadian resume suggests. If we don't land one in the draft
(preferably) or FA then we're in big trouble and we can't put Ferentz in as a starter or Mac is doomed.

That said, the news that J.J. Taylor looks noticeably bigger is interesting. I have seen some evidence that he can play some tackle football and might be
the heir apparent to James White, but he's going to need to prove that he can block and, especially, catch better than he's shown so far. I think his
frequent inactive status and low snap count last season, when we were down a couple of able bodies, might mean that our staff, meaning Bill, doesn't love him.

If that is the case, then look for us to draft a pass-catching back to learn the ropes. This is why I'm high on Georgia's James Cook, who looks like a
James White clone to me when it comes to pass-catching. Outstanding hands. He's very smooth and efficient.

I'm having trouble identifying "Patriot-type" prospects in this Draft, because I'm not quite sure what we are system-wise or if we are in some sort of philosophical shift. The
clues on that, personnel-wise, seem somewhat nebulous to me.

When you were looking for a Linebacker back in the day you didn't have to worry about how many downs a guy was capable of playing or whether or not you
were a 4-3, 3-4 or other.

I've decided that I want it all. I want a big guy that is fast, can cover and tackle and we'll let the system sort itself out. The top two on my wish list are Chad Muma and Troy Anderson, both former
defensive backs, but both have great size and athleticism. They play a similar style. Muma's better at the point of attack and a better tackler, but Anderson is just
learning the position and could be outstanding with some work. These are modern, free-range LBs that won't get steamrolled on running plays.

You said a mouthful right there. The same thing is bugging me. Look at the Pats roster now...10 LBs are signed. 2 are in the 235 lb range (Terez Hall and Cam McGrone) and 8 are over 240. 4 of those 8 are 250lb+ (Bentley, Jennings, Judon, Langi).

We've barely glimpsed 6 of the younger ones - Hall, Jennings, McGrone, McMillan, Perkins and Tavai. Then there's Uche who has played more than those 6 but not enough that he's carved out a clear role just yet.

My point is that 1) BB has been all over the map with his LB prototype and 2) fans want Lloyd (or Muma or Anderson) without knowing what Hall and McGrone can do.

I'm glad to see you're confused because I've been confused since Hightower was drafted when the entire league was going the direction of smaller speedier guys like Von Miller.

I reckon that one thing the Pats have always been (or tried to be) is a team that can morph on both sides of the ball depending on the opponent. So, you have a passing league with
a lot of dominant WRs in your own division, but we're also seeing a rise in retro power-running systems to take advantage of smaller coverage LBs. It's an interesting time in the NFL and
most people pick a style and go all in. I will say that I doubt we're scrapping the Morph 11 for the Tampa 2 or whatever. Maybe we'll just add a wrinkle or two.

Good point about the young LBs. You're right in that we really haven't seen these guys and yet everybody is pounding the table for a Hightower replacement. Maybe his
successor is already here, but I can't fathom Uche. Can he play or not? I think his superior traits should have earned him a lot more snaps last season, but he seemed to be in
the time-out chair often.

It wouldn't surprise me if we don't take a single LB but it wouldn't completely shock me if we took 3.

I hate to be so confuzzled, but I can't get a handle on this draft.

Really looking forward to the actual draft.... 'cause all this draft talk and mock drafts is getting boring. I enjoyed it a month ago but at this point, just bring it on!
Post Draft talk always good way to kill a week or two on the planet.

Yup. This is what I meant. Way too much will they do this, that, or something else?!?!...

I’ve really warmed to CB Marcus Jones from Houston. The guy has arguably the best tape of any CB in the draft. Save for the fact he’s 5’9”, he’d probably be a top-5 or top-10 pick.

I also really like Stingley, Gardner, Booth, McDuffie, and Elam as well, so give me any of them and I’ll be happy.

Brent Muschberger (sp) just told me the draft is the best spring time activity to bet on.

If you are betting on the draft, you need help.
Brent Musberger never found an activity he didn't enjoy betting on.

Always have to love the guys that actually live in Vegas. :coffee:
