Coaching Profile: Bill O’Brien Rejoins Patriots as OC

Sadly, they only need two, right?

This is ridiculous.

In 2021, the NFL approved changes requiring every team to interview at least two external minority candidates for open head coaching positions and at least one external minority candidate for a coordinator job. Additionally, at least one minority and/or female candidate must be interviewed for senior level positions (e.g., club president and senior executives).

Following the 2022 Spring League Meeting, NFL teams are now required to conduct outside interviews with a minority and/or female candidate for vacant QB coach positions. With many prospective head coaches beginning their careers in the QB room, the ruling is expected to help increase the hiring of minority head coaches in the future.

Any time an organization or a state tries to legislate or rule make an outcome it blows up in the face of the people they purport to govern/represent.

How long before the NFL rules that ability and hard work are to be ignored on personnel decisions solely to reach an outcome? Have they already?

I am in no way disparaging anyone. The cream always rises in TODAYS world. These policies disparage them.

The NFL is no different. Successful in spite of itself for now but nothing is guaranteed.

Alabama fans want BO'B gone as much as some want him in New England. That to me is a big red flag. Apparently he had a penchant for calling shotgun formation, spread offense plays at idiotic times. Just like he did with the Pats.

I am nervous about BOB and Mac getting along. BOB is a firey personality and I'm not sure Mac will be Ok with that for an entire season. If he yelled at BOB the way he did Patricia on the sideline, BOB will get up in his face and try to deck him.

We've had this discussion before, even posted an article on Mac and BOB'S relationship. There is nothing to see there. Not something I am concerned with considering else.

Alabama’s 2 losses were due to the defense where the offense scored 51 points and 31 points. Alabama lost all their stars to the NFL. Despite this, the only QB in Alabama history to win a heisman is the one O’brien coached. The only offense in Alabama history to have a 4000+ yard passer, two 1000+ yard receivers, and a 1000+ rusher all in the same season, was O’Brien’s offense.

O’Brien is much better suited for the pros. O’Brien and Daboll are easily the best coaches from BB’s entire coaching tree.

I am not nearly as high on BOB as the OC who fix this offense as many here it seems. I mean for sure he is upgrade over Patricia but then again any coach that has offensive experience is an upgrade.

How do folks feel about Kingsbury? I like him as he is a fresh mind and familiar with us too.

I have nothing against O'Brien but I'm not going to oversell the guy the way you are. I'm more "meh" on him. He'll do but I'm not ecstatic. I'd feel better if his offenses put up a better fight against GA the last 2 years. The Texas A&M loss in '21 is on Bama's offense (2 turnovers) as much as their defense. Bama was a heavy favorite in that game and spit the bit.
I also wouldn't put a lot of stock in Bama's first 4000 yd passer because passing the ball that much has never been Saban's style to win games.

Well, he was effectively the OC in 2010, and was the OC in 2011. Those offenses ranked 1st and 3rd in points, and right at the top in most categories. And that's with Walker as WR1, leading the mummified corpse of Deion Branch and Chad Johnson as the only other 2 WRs to get targeted more than 10 times, with a variety pack of mediocrity (and talent yet to develop) at RB.

But ya gotta hand it to the guy...dude could utilize the shit out of TEs.
