RIP David Bowie

I was never a big fan of his, but always liked this song a lot:

A and E Network used to have a great show called "Live by Request" where bands would appear and play requests for the audience. I always thought Bowies performance was the best one they ever had. This is the whole gig if you have time, it's great. My favorite on this is the very last one. "I'm afraid of Americans".

What a shame.

Heard something on the radio this morning that was even more surprising.

He pioneered a certain financial deal.

Back in the 90's, at the dawn of the Internet, he wanted to raise capital to some sort of Internet startup.

He sold bonds, using the royalties from his music as the way to pay off the bond.

He raised $35M. Prudential bought most of the bonds and got 7.5% annual return over 10 years.

A proverbial win-win.

A bunch of other artists copied the idea.

It's a bit ironic that the Internet killed this way for an artist to raise cash.

Prior to the Internet, one could make a pretty good prediction as to what kine of revenue any given type of royalties would provide. Since then, piracy, file sharing, etc. has made that less predictable and so no one is willing to fork over the cash to buy such bonds.

I know this isn't Bowie's version, but it's one of the better one's out there. I think David would approve.

Very few artists have an opportunity to write a good-bye album. Freddie got to do Innuendo, Johnny Cash's remake of Hurt is one of the all-time good-bye recordings.

This was clearly one of those. I heard "Lazarus" (above) for the 1st time this morning and it's haunting.

I had actually watched the video of Lazarus yesterday and thought Bowie being Bowie...dramatic, theatrical, surreal. When I heard the news this morning I rewatched it and realized the symbolism. This is my interpretation:

The wooden closet opened. Not yet ready to go. Lying in bed sickly, reaching, reaching, struggling for release. Frantic writing, have ro get the album done, write, write, hurry, get the words down, get it out.

Ahhh, finished. Now, finally, i can step into the casket, the wooden closet.

I saw none of that yesterday. I did today.

One of my musical and artistic heroes. There's one left.

Absolutely stricken. I just cannot believe he's gone.

A kid in one of my classes, 16 years old from BumbleFvck, Texas, was destroyed over the news. He was listening to Suffragette City, his favorite. Mine as well.

RIP, David.

Never heard any of his songs. The only thing I remember him . From is that movie when I was a kid.

Well then you heard a couple songs anyway. He had several in Labyrinth (which is the movie I assume you are talking about, unless you saw The Last Temptation of Christ as a kid).
