The Golf thread

Netflix recently aired Full Swing, an 8 episode "behind the scenes look" at the lives/play of various PGA pros highlighting 2022 season events

of LIV note one episode features Ian Poulter w/ an in-depth dive into his particular reasons for joining that tour --- also a less deep reveal of Dustin Johnson views on his LIV signing

I understand Poulter going for the $$ (his age, only 3 PGA wins | 12 Euro wins over 27 yrs) but Johnson going smacks of less time/ effort playing to keep high-maintenence Gretzky's daughter in her LA-LA lifestyle

one of the best take-aways for me was re-visiting the epic collapse of Mito Pereira at the PGA Championship where he performed THE WORST SWING I ever saw a PRO execute on his drive on 18.

now at age 27, having only joined the PGA Tour in 2021 he was poised to win his 1st event before shidding the bed but Full Swing was sympathetic in pulling for him and his future w/ the PGA

surprise, surprise --- guess who just joined LIV last week? Get that $$ while you're not hot Mito

I've watched the first few and it's certainly an interesting behind-the-scenes look at these guys and just how hard it is to stay great.

I guess that even the best can be driven batshit crazy by the pressure of not having every nerve ending in your body go spastic
right in the middle of doing something you've done thousands of times without any problems.

Also, you are spot on about Mito, but Victor Hovland hit a tee shot at Riviera the other day that went so far right that it ended up on the far side of the rough. Of the adjacent hole. I
loved it, because it proved that one of the better players in the world can jack a ball sideways off the tee once in a while, just like me.

It also reveals that some of these guys have zero mental stability. I prefer to be just an OK player who has finally achieved a form of zen-like calm based on
not really caring if I fuck a few up here and there. It's a lot cheaper that way than flipping out and smashing clubs. It's fun to watch other people melt
down like I used to.

I was watching and they said that was Hovland's strategy on that hole and did it all tournament, although that one went too far off, but he was trying to put it on teh other fairway then cut back over. he bogey'd that hole but only because he missed a reasonable putt after recovering from his "Strategy"

I've used that strategy for years.

Just finished watching the Full Swing series on Netflix. Kinda like porn for golf nuts.
I had positive views of most of the players that were featured and became a big fan of Theegala. I hope that the kid wins a big one really soon.
My opinion of DJ went down quite a bit. Keopka came off as being kind of a jerk and should never dye his hair blonde again.

DJ and Brooks are both condescending, egomaniac jerks. DJ hides it slightly better. Brooks doesn't even try. I was glad to see both leave the PGA.

In fact, they left BECAUSE of the reason for my disdain.

for those who hadn't seen the Mito tee shot swing I memtioned that cost him the PGA Championship last year, here ya go

most of us bogey to barely-break-100 golfers here prolly have better form than that yank-swing gag job :)

I said this at the time and before he hit the ball, "what the hell is he hitting a driver for, all he needs to do is hit it on the fairway."
I can't remember if his caddy said 3 or 5, and he said no.

On a more serious note, I thought the Honda this past weekend was highly entertaining. I enjoyed watching some of the no names battle it out immensely. The PGA might be onto something here because while the elevated tournaments and the majors will be even better, I think the drama and the life-changing outcomes of these lesser events are also very, very compelling. I was pulling hard yesterday for Eric Cole not because I dislike Kirk but because I wanted to see a 34-year-old rookie win on tour with his mom watching every shot. Dinner was late last night because I didn't order it until after the playoff. The butter chicken was delightful, though. (Indian)

I saw the end of that (And some of the earlier rounds) and agree that it was good to see "no names" in a close match. basically, "name" players are fine, but if someone has a big lead on day 4 it can be boring and only if they start choking does it get interesting.

What a change in the leader board between day 1 and day 2 at the Arnold Palmer. There was very windy conditions on day 2 which contributed to the high scores for the morning groups.
Should be interesting today to see what the conditions are and if some of the top players can make their way back.

Didn’t watch but checked leaderboard and was very surprised. Thought Rahm was going to run away with it

I love golf...

Went out and played my first nine of the year. Didn't play particularly great but did manage one par. I think this is the earliest that I have ever played.

Crowded leaderboard after 3rd round
Rahm fell off a cliff
i flipped it on well into round and did a double-take when I saw Hovland on top (Katiyama eventually took over at -9 under)
should be good one tomorrow
