Looking at the Patriots - 2019

That seems like a pretty high profile position for a former player to just jump into. I wonder if he will be groomed to be the next DC.

Considering his contract with the Raiders I think that it was going to be far fetched. Sure, as a player he's one of the best, but what he showed this offseason leaves a lot of doubt that he won't be a locker room cancer.

It's really not an issue about LR cancer, but, rather, the combination of that kind of history along with a big salary means that Bill wouldn't do it.

He's never done it here. Not once.

Yeah, it's frustrating at times to see the Pats do the thing where they ignore ultra-talented players they have a chance to acquire, but nobody has ever been better at understanding what makes a team tick than Bill, so how are we going to get pissed about it? The strength of the wolf is in the pack.

Every single time Brown acted like a jerk, and there were a number of those times (like when he was mugging it up filming a video for instagram where you could hear Tomlin in the background warning his players not to do that stuff) I thought about what we do here and I was glad he was somewhere else.

I love Jon Gruden, but he is making some ridiculous moves out there. That team could go straight through the floorboards the way it's going so far, but lets see how the draft goes.

Regarding the Rosen to the Pats talk.

Maybe Rosen had it rough in AZ.

Warren Sharp‏Verified account @SharpFootball
Some context surrounding Josh Rosen's 2018 rookie season: •Switched OCs mid-season •Played behind NFL's worst pass pro O-Line & was extremely inexperienced •Extremely inexperienced receiving corps •Of any rookie QB: -Faced most top-15 pass Ds -Faced least bottom-15 pass Ds
He also had the support of the NFL's worst rushing attack. And was faced with 8.4 yards to go on 3rd downs on avg, the most in the NFL, setting up predictable passing situations needing deeper routes to convert behind the NFL's worst offensive line. Not a great situation for any rookie.

Did Adaleus Thomas (sp?) not meet this criteria?

He'd be a pretty good counter to my argument, but when we acquired him he wasn't well known and did not have a track record of being a dick as far as I know.

By now we know he actually was a dick, but I think it's fair to say that everybody thought we were getting a solid guy at the time, including Bill. I recall he was handing out "Humble Pie" shirts early on and then things started to go downhill with snowy driveway gate being one of the memorable problems.

I probably annoy people (not saying you) by constantly referring to high character whenever we are talking about acquiring somebody, but I do that because I believe it is a much bigger deal in Foxboro than it is in any other NFL city and yet that tendency is still a somewhat under-appreciated factor in why we win rings.

Sometimes reputations turn out to be all wrong, but most of the time you're better off skipping the divas.

No?

Why the fuck would you want that kind of batshit crazy on your team? He makes Beckham look sane. :coffee:

Exactly. I don't believe Rosenhaus for one second. Total whore.

Antonio Brown wouldn't last a month in Foxboro. If the Pats really did inquire about him then it was all about info gathering on the way Pittsburgh does things than it was a serious attempt to get him.

Prefer a pick.

Lower cost. Longer term.

The first dynasty run had 1s across the board on Dline and a kickass secondary.
Lower cost and longer term for a draft pick as opposed to a veteran FA, but that first era dynasty started off with Bobby Hamilton, Brandon Mitchell, and Anthony Pleasant. Seymour was the only #1 on the DLine in XXXVI. The rest were old guys BB picked up as Free Agents.

Our defensive backfield had Tebucky Jones, 60-year-old O.T.I.S. and guys like Tyrone Poole, Hank Poteat, and I think earthwind Moreland.

We all think that defense was great, and it was, but not because of big name players and our backfield wasn't kickass at all. The only two real players we had were Milloy and Law, and of those first three SBs Law played only in two and Milloy played only in one. Hank Poteat replaced Law in SBXXXiX and I don't think Seymour played in XXXIX either.

There were better players on the DLine in 2003-4 than 2001, but that first dynasty SB the defense basically ran with role players. It was actually the LB corps that was our best unit, with WMG, Bruschi, and Vrabel.

As it says in the bible, the race is not always to the swift, nor the contest to the strong, but that's the way to lay your bets.

I thought that's the reason why Mr. PumpkinPieHairCutGuy hired him in the first place?

Randy Moss was never very high character...he did have talent though.

moss was not a bad charr guy, teammates and coaches raved about him and he put in the work necessary was not lazy. Also i believe moss was in NE for the firs year or 2 under a prove it type deal, so he had a financial incentive to toe the line, and funny enough when he did start acting up he was gone.

we didn't, you are correct but upon further review Thomas was a Raven, we know all Ravens to be Dicks.

Play along!? :toast:

The Pats have 2 trade offers on draft day. They can trade their 2nd rnd pick, 64th, and get a player plus a conditional 5th rnd pick.

1. QB Josh Rosen from AZ

2. WR Sterling Shepard from the Giants

Rosen has 3 years left on his rookie deal plus maybe the 5th year option.
He has a great arm but is said to be a narcissistic, egotistical and self-centered guy who lacks great social skills. The Pats need a developmental QB. He would ride the pine and learn for a year or two unless Brady is injured. His rookie year he was awful but AZ had the 32nd ranked OL and the 32nd ranked running game. Fitzgerald was his only decent WR. He had no help. His play wasn't all on him imo.

Shepard is a very good Slot guy with proven NFL ability who's production compares very well to Julian Edelman's with Eli as his QB. He is due for a new contract in 2020 so he's in his contract year this year. Edelman will be 33 on 5/22. Berrios probably isn't the answer to replace JE otherwise Humphries wouldn't have been targeted. Shepard would play right away in Amendola's role alongside JE. Flawless character and locker room guy.

The Giants may trade for Rosen soon so this much talked-about scenario may not happen. Nevertheless this is a fun exercise.

If I'm making the decision, I trade for Rosen bc of the importance of the QB position. I also think he'd learn how to interact with people by watching Brady for a year or 2. Ditto learning our system.

Shepard is enticing bc of the immediate need for WRs and he's a proven good one. But he's a short term answer to a long term problem.

Rosen is my final answer.
