I have no qualms with Welker, but this
is absurd. Yes, unequivocally, was is fortunate for the team that Welker left.
The offer for the Patriots was reportedly 2 years, 10 million with realistic incentives up to 16 million dollars.
Welker's play has dropped off because Peyton has gotten him concussed more in two years than he did in six years with Brady. We all know Peyton leaves his WRs out to dry. Ask Austin Collie and Emmanual Sanders.
This offseason where we are tight against the cap, we would be free of the contract (instead we are stuck with 3 more years at 6 million with Amendola, a #3 WR and at least for this season stuck with that contract on the books. You really wouldn't want the future cap freedom plus obviously the cap space this season to resign Revis and McCourty and having enough room to sign a legitimate vet upgrade at DE, DT or OG?
Put down the haterade. You can maybe make the theoretical argument that we don't win the SB with Welker (a flimsy argument at best), but looking beyond actual performance, the cap situation would be light years better with Welkers' expiring contract instead of Amendolas dead weight.
Amendola is going to have the 7th highest cap hit on the team this season. Our #3 WR. I was always on the pro-Amendola side, but acting like that's great value is just objectively wrong.
I think the thing I remember most about Wes is that clip where he tells Belichick that he was pretty happy letting someone else take over punt returns.
Belichick says 'Way to compete' and turns away.
I think Wes had no idea how to relate with Bill, unlike a lot of other players (like Edeleman). That probably hurt him more than anything else.
I don't envision a problem re-embracing the guy down the road, but I'm not there yet.
I don't remember ever hearing or seeing this and sounds completely unlike Welker. Especially given that he continued to field punts in Denver.
In high school Welker played safety, was the place kicker, return man, and lead WR, and in Miami was pretty close to the same. He had 581 tackles, 80 TDs, 22 INTs, and 35 field goals. Welker was always a gammer. Remember his rabid squirrel face on punt returns? I can't believe the revisionist history that is going on here.
The only scenario I can buy that story is during 2010 his ACL return season or maybe after a concussion or some injury like that. Welker has always been a great competitor.
